Very quiet, a Buick badge wouldn’t feel out of place. At about 8.5 seconds it’s no Tesla in Ludicrous mode. The run to sixty is quicker that the outgoing Volt. Our friend torque gets the credit, electric motors have plenty off the line. (ON CAMERA) Volt is nice and punchy in city driving (SOUND UP) 0-30 takes about 2.5 seconds, that’s pretty quick. Volt’s tech is a geek’s feast but (START SOUND UP) what makes it great, right down to the shift lever, is that it feels like driving a normal car. A new feature (BEEP) gives you a head’s up. (ON CAMERA) I often forget to close the charge port door, it’s sort of like walking around with your fly open. Completely spent, it charges in 13 hours on 110 current or 4.5 on 220. Volt’s lithium-ion battery pack still runs down the spine but, with fewer cells, is lower and lighter. The two motor-generators buried under here are much closer in size to each other this time. Slightly larger, it’s 100 pounds lighter and drinks standard grade gas now. (SUPER) Electric power is 149 horsepower with 294 lb-ft of torque. Let’s start with the four-cylinder engine. The second generation is even more impressive. (ON CAMERA) I always admired the engineering of the Voltec powertrain, so much that, full disclosure, I bought one in the Cadillac ELR. The second gen adds refinement and efficiency, looking less like a mash up of Camaro and science experiment and more like a Honda Civic. Meaning you could drive to Duluth at the drop of a hat. The concept of the first Chevrolet Volt was simple- drive 40 miles or so on battery power alone and eliminate range anxiety with a gas-powered generator. It now looks less like a mash-up of the Chevrolet Camaro and a science experiment and more like a Honda Civic. But when operating in pure electric mode, it gets a combined city/highway rating of 106 miles per equivalent (mpe). When running using the gas engine, the US Department of Energy gives the Volt a perfectly respectable combined city/highway rating of 42 miles per gallon (mpg), which is not bad for a conventional sedan. 2018 Volt Fuel Efficiencyīut what about fuel economy? This takes a little longer to explain as the Volt is a plug-in hybrid, meaning it can operate in different modes. Simply plug in your Volt when you get home and you’ll have a fully charged car ready and waiting the next day. There are big savings to be had if you mainly use the Chevy Volt in electric mode, which is easy for many people who drive 50 miles or less each day. The average annual cost of fuel (both electric and gasoline) is estimated to be $700, and driving 25 miles will cost $1.01 in electric mode, and $1.68 driving on gas only. Your savings could be even greater if you drive a lot, or currently drive a car that doesn’t get 27 miles per gallon. In terms of actual costs, the same report estimates that driving Chevy’s Volt will save $4,250 in fuel costs over 5 years compared to a typical gas-powered vehicle getting 27 MPG. But when that short trip ends up turning into a long one, the hybrid Volt has a total range of 420 miles. Given that the Volt has an impressive 53 mile range, with both the LT and Premier trims, with a fully charged battery, that may not be too often, especially if you're just using it in the city to get to work or run errands. The Volt gives you the advantages of an Electric Vehicle (EV) for shorter commutes, including an ultra-quiet ride, but with the knowledge that you always have that gas engine to keep you going after the pure electric mode range has been reached. It’s been a favorite of hybrid fans since first hitting the road in 2012, and has been getting better and better ever since.
